Chè Cốm Sen Dừa | Vietnam Heritage Corner

Vietnam Heritage Corner #3 at The Five Residences Hanoi introduced Chè Cốm Sen Dừa, a traditional dessert that captures the gentle spirit of Hanoi’s autumn.

The Story of Cốm – Hanoi’s Delicacy

Green sticky rice (cốm) wrapped in lotus leaves, a traditional Hanoi delicacy.

Cốm, or green sticky rice, is one of Hanoi’s most beloved treats. It comes from tender young rice grains that farmers harvest early. In the village of Vòng, artisans roast and pound the grains until they turn soft and release a gentle fragrance. Wrapped in lotus leaves, cốm is more than food. It is a seasonal gift and a symbol of Hanoi’s craft and tradition.

Cốm and Hanoi’s Autumn

Hanoi autumn with vendors selling cốm, the iconic green sticky rice of the season.

Autumn in Hanoi would not be complete without cốm. From mid-July to late September on the lunar calendar, vendors carry bundles of green rice through the streets. Their soft calls of “Cốm đây!” bring warmth to the season. The chewy grains, the nutty lotus seeds, and the lotus leaf wrapping create a picture of Hanoi’s autumn. It is simple, elegant, and full of nostalgia.
